Yume woke up, she wished it were a dream, but as she stared at her own hands, she realised it wasn’t.
Her pristine silky hands were now twice the size they used to be as she looked at her mirror and hoped to see the young bubbly girl she once was but now, a grown teenagerwith a short red spiky bob hair and green eyes appeared in the mirror.

It wasn’t a pretty farmhouse anymore, but an apartment in a towering building, sprawling with insects everywhere with stenches filling up the corridors of the building; her family were evicted from their farm to make way for factories.

Ten years was fast, but the memories the invasion was still fresh in her mind. Her beloved city, filled with small cheerful houses and taverns were replaced by towering metal buildings filled with neon lights and highways that spread across the skies.

The once cheerful and bright sunlit streets of the city were now a canopy of bridges and buildings that blocked the sun from shining on it…
Yume was on her way to school as she walked through a familiar area; what used to be the heart of the city.

Yume almost imagined the statue of the Sky Goddess with her sword triumphantly pointed in the air that once stood on the heart of the city that used to be filled with children playing on it, butnow, in its place, stood a towering statue of a Federal soldier standing triumphantly, holding his rifle upright and under his boot, the dissembled head of the Goddess.

And what used to be children playing now was filled with beggars, hobos, and lepers around the statue.
A plqque on the statue read:
“FAITH IN MAN”
“DESPAIR IN GODS”

That statue was the scar in the minds of all the Averonians in the city, as the mere presence of the statue opened a grim chapter in Yume’s memory, the day where Gunships and Soldiers descended from the sky, razing the city to the ground. Yume could not forget the sight of Knights and mages, helplessly struggling against the heavily armoured soldiers with mere swords, bows and spell, only to be hopelessly mowed down by gunfire and artillery.

Even Averon’s greatest heroines, the Magic Girls, clad in beautiful and valiant armour, serving the Goddess by protecting the weak were hopelessly defeated by hails of lead and shrapnel, their corpses burnt into slag by flamethrowers…

The Goddess was known to be the Slayer of Darkness, who defeated the Evil Lady herself in a long ago ancient crusade, only to have that glory stripped down through the barrel of a Federal gun, the flag that used to fly over the statue was the glorious flag of the Averionian empire was now a hologram flag, donned with the colours of the Federation; a globe of green and blue with laurels over it.

She remembered the first time she saw a Federal; they were human, like Yume, but taller, slightly bulkier and resistant to magic, as she witnessed for the first time, a bolt of magic being deflected upon impact.

Yume reached the school, which was once the La Maria Farrineca Academy of Magic and the Arcane Arts but now, replaced by a Grim looking Campus, Federal Property.
No, they did not teach anything magical, but rather the bland and boring theories of sciences and Mathematics, in place of its illogical counterpart, Magic.

Yume dozed off during the lecture, only to be awoken by the fierce accented holler by the bald, lean and tall professor.
She hated Federal education, no magic, no spells, no runes, but bland equations scribbled all over the holo-board. But, in the Federation, the only place for the uneducated was either the streets, or the battlefield.

There was conflict all over the city. Riots and fights were commonplace. The larger Federals consistently picked on Smaller Averonians. Violence, mayhem and thievery were all over the city. Yume knew it wasn’t safe alone as she banded with her only friend, Anya, who had pointy ears and Silver eyes with a short spiky green hairstyle and a large fringe covering one eye.She was an elf, once discriminated amongst the city folk in the past. But now, it’s no longer elf or human, but short meat and tall meat.

Night fell. Yume envisioned the streets to be alit with torches and lamps, with cheerful and happy taverns but in place were jungles of towers with neon lights displaying advertisements and propaganda. Yume missed the sights of the mysterious and charming Magic girls who kept a vigilant watch for Shadow Beasts, servants of the long dead evil Lady, who preyed on lone and young victims, absorbing their souls in the hope to revive their queen. The Magic Girls were now replaced by Gigantic 8 feet tall Soldiers, donned in armour that seemed to crush an ordinary man with its sheer weight, full face helmets with tubes all over them and heavy calibre rifles.

“MOVE ALONG” one of them grunted at Yume, glaring at her with white glowing eyes behind his obsidian tinted visor that covered his face.
Yume quickly seek refuge on Anya’s arms, comforting herself from the encounter.

Supersoldiers were one of the Federation’s most fearsome infantry grunts, genetically and technologically altered to serve the more dangerous tasks of the infantry. Yume had remembered the first time she met one on the day of the invasion… She remembered how one of them mutilated a Magic Girl with ease…

The duo had reached the main street, which was filled with the injured and corpses all over with junk littered all over the place - it was the aftermath of a riot. Yume tightened her grip on Anya’s arms as they carefully traversed the injured crowd with the chemical smell of tear gas still lingering in the air.

Yume remembered reading the news - there was an extravagant auction being held in the city by the Federals. They were auctioning all sorts of precious artefacts from the spoils of war to the rich and snobbish Federal aristocrats. Yume cursed under her breath, seeing how the awe and glory of her beloved homeland had been reduced to this.

The duo soon reached a derelict street, vigilantly looking out for one another’s backs when out of the sudden, a Magic Girl dashed pass them and from the behind, being chased down and fired upon by a group of Supersoldiers.

Yume and Anya quickly took cover behind a dumpster in an alley, trying not to get involved in the conflict.

As both Yume and Anya hid behind, the distinctive sounds of bullets impacting on flesh were heard, followed by pained screams. Yume peeked out from cover and saw a pool of blood and the Magic Girl, gasping for life. The Supersoldiers were far away. Yume thought to herself that she could drag her to safety and without hesitation, she ran off, shrugging Anya’s hand that was pulling her skirt, trying to stop her.
Yume dashed to the Magic Girl, grabbed her arms and started dragging her but when she begun so, a white crystalline jewel fell out of her hands. Could it be? It looked like the jewels that Magic Girls used to transform themselves from ordinary girls to valiant warriors in armour, and it looked like the jewel that was the star of the auction. She pondered for a while, whilst examining the gem she picked up from her and suddenly, a mighty shadow was casted over Yume as she felt irradiated by mechanical heat. She looked up whilst trembling, it was a Supersoldier, one of them who were chasing the woman.

“MOVE ASIDE CITIZEN!” it roared at Yume with a Radio-like distorted voice as it snatched the body from Yume and rummaged it. But nothing fell out. The Supersoldier then turned his head towards Yume, and stomped towards her, catching a glimpse of the hidden Gem on Yume that he was looking for.

“HAND IT OVER! ACCOMPLICES WILL BE FIRED UPON AS WELL!” He demanded as he pointed his .50 calibre assault rifle at her.
*Tok!* A stone suddenly impacted on the Supersoldier’s helmet and from the distance, it was Anya, trying to distract him.
Anya continued distracting him by hurling rocks, yelling at Yume to make an escape but Yume was still on the ground, paralysed with fear as she watched the Supersoldier advancing towards Anya and grabbing her by the neck.Yume couldn’t get up, her tears rolled out as she witnessed the 8 foot tall giant hurling her best friend away and going back to Yume but suddenly… the jewel started to glow.

Bright blue streams of magical energy began swirling around her as she felt her clothes suddenly disappearing to thin air, replaced by a long flowing elegant dress, plated with jewel adorned armour as her hair turned from her spiky bob hairstyle to a long, flowing and elegant hair as an elegant tiara materialised on her head and on her hands, a gorgeous crystalline long sword studded with gems materialised as well.
Yume, looked at her hands, now plated in gauntlets, and found herself in elegant armour. Am I a Magic Girl now?  She thought as she lifted up her magical sword. But, only certain girls are synchronised with their gems! How could this be? She thought to herself as she pointed her new weapon at the enemy.

But the Supersoldier was unfazed by all this as he was popping a fresh magazine throughout the transformation progress. When he was done, he lifted his gun and started firing.

With wired reflexes, Yume conjured up a magical barrier, but she knew it wouldn’t last long; 12.7mmx87mm caseless FEDA bullets are designed to penetrate the hardest of steels, let it be firing at a weak magical shield, as Yume was already feeling the tremendous shock of the bullets impacting.

Yume knew that she had to launch a counterattack, as her barrier was failing... but with graceful reflexes, Yume broke out from the barrier and brandished her blade towards the Supersoldier, knocking out his weapon.
But that didn’t stop him from giving up as he tried to smack Yume down with his metallic gloves, only to have his devastating blows evaded by her with grace and out of the sudden, the crystalline blade was pierced through the armour of the Supersoldier and with an agonised mighty roar, he fell down like a great tree.

Yume stared at the body with a smug on her face, knowing that she could defeat the Federation’s strongest infantry unit. But all that thought was dropped when she saw a group of Federal soldiers and Supersoldiers alike finally catching up; she has to run. She quickly dashed towards the alley, while grabbing the unconscious Anya and the magic girl and fled from the vicinity.

As the bruised Anya regained consciousness, she found herself lying on a couch, and to her shock, in front of her was Yume, clad in the most elegant armour she had ever seen in her like and tending to the other girl’s wounds.

“Yume? Is... owowow... that you?” Anya stammered to her whilst clutching her bruised torso.
“Yes” she replied as she channelled streams of healing magic to the Blue haired woman’s bullet wound.

It was not before long that the woman finally came to. She smiled faintly in joy with tears of happiness as she looked at Yume.
“The princess Gem… Has finally accepted its champion... The holy power of the Goddess herself… imbued in you! Will… You… Lead us to battle? To drive out the Federal evil?” she stammered in a weak voice to Yume.

Yume was not sure as to how to answer the question; did she have to bear all the burden as the Goddess incarnate? Did she have the will and strength to lead the battle against evil? But as she looked around herself, she knew the answer… Clad in holy armour, flowing with beauty and valour, the marks of a Magic Girl. She did not volunteer for this, she was made and chosen for this; not everyone can be a Magic Girl. She knew it was the Goddess’ will to protect the weak and destroy evil. She turned towards the Magical Girl and said, “Yes ‘mam”.

                            ********************************************************

Yume woke up. She wished it was a dream, but as she stared at her own hands, she realised it wasn’t.

Her radiant steel gauntlets were stained with dried blood and cracks all over them. She looked at a puddle of water on the ground in hopes to see the beautiful elegant face of a Magic girl but it was a horribly disfigured face with scorched hair, incinerated by napalm fire.
It wasn’t a battle anymore but a massacre. Ten years was fast as she remembered the day she started rounding up her people for a rebellions. The final battle was no longer a fair fight as Federal war machines which were never seen before poured out from the skies as Magical Girls were being shot down by the sheer firepower of the Federation as corpses civilian and combatants piled exponentially on top of each other.

It was time for the burning of corpses; The Federals would round up fallen soldiers and keep them as prisoners but now, they were ordered to leave no witnesses alive. After all, they were all betrayers of the Federation…

The frantic battlefield of the zealous Magic Girls and other magic soldiers are now filled with hopeless pleas of mercy and screaming of fear and anguish. Some had even turned themselves to the dark powers of the Evil Lady, committing sacrilege to their Goddess but only to be shot down again by the full force of the Federation.

Yume was on the foot of the statue in the middle of the city, now in rubbles. She tried to remember the happy memories of children playing on the statue but could not think properly with the foul stench of corpses around, the cracks of gunfire and the desperate cries of death and sorrow.

And what used to be hobos and beggars in the area, were now filled with burnt and mutilated corpses of her people.

And then… a towering heavily armoured figure with a familiar crack on its armour loomed over the fallen Yume…

“FAITH IN MAN”
“DESPAIR IN GODS”

He growled at Yume as he lifted up his metallic boots, hovered it towards Yume’s head…
